Capsule Docks With Space Station

Capsule Docks With Space Station

A capsule carrying British astronaut Major Tim Peake has successfully docked with the International Space Station.

He and two colleagues will now spend around two hours making sure the connection is stable so they can enter the ISS which travels around the Earth at 17,500mph at an average altitude of 220 miles.

Earlier, the Major Peake, Russian commander Yuri Malenchenko and NASA astronaut Tim Kopra took off in the Soyuz FG rocket at 11.03am UK time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.

The 43-year-old Briton looked at the on-board video camera and gave a thumbs up gesture as the spacecraft completed its first booster stage and the boosters fell away. read more

Astronaut Peake ‘Looking Forward To Space Walk’

Britain’s member of the International Space Station crew tells a news conference he loves the feeling of weightlessness.

The former Army major said that he had enjoyed practising for zero gravity when training for his mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday.

:: Watch Tim Peake blast off into space at 11.03am tomorrow on Sky News TV – channels Sky 501, Virgin Media 602, Freesat 202, Freeview 132 – and on our mobile apps

Sky Q New Generation Skybox

Sky Q New Generation Skybox

When Sky launched its pay-TV platform in the UK, it was the outsider in the broadcast industry.

But now it is part of the media establishment, and last week’s launch of its new set-top box was the first move in its fight against a new breed of rivals. Sky Q is its response to the gauntlet Apple threw down in September. Launching a revamped version of the company’s Apple TV set-top box, Apple chief executive Tim Cook proclaimed: “The future of TV is apps.”

But Sky’s forthcoming “Q” service is aimed at a very different future from the one targeted by Apple, Google, Amazon and Roku. Those services all have streaming set-top boxes that would make broadcast TV channels just another app icon to pick.

Sky, by contrast, says “the future of TV is TV”. Andrew Olson is the broadcaster’s director of new products, and has led a years-long effort to develop Sky Q. He says the company understands “that people now live their lives with a mix of different screens”. But that mix is a problem for Sky. Data from the most recent British Audience Research Board (Barb) study of Britons’ TV habits, published by Ofcom, suggests that the only people watching more TV than they did a decade ago are the over-65s. read more

Facebook Dislike Button Not For Trolling

Facebook Dislike Button Not For Trolling

Mark Zuckerberg says the new tool will allow the website’s users to “express empathy” with their friends.

Facebook is working on a ‘dislike’ button, its founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced, after years of resisting popular demand for such a tool.

During a question-and-answer session at the social network’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, he revealed the button would allow Facebook users to “express empathy” with their friends.

“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it,” he said. read more

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

We’ve heard that before Samsung unveils the Galaxy Note 5, or maybe even at the same time, it will be supersizing its current Android flagship smartphone. There has been word on the street that a Plus-sized version of the Galaxy S6 edge is on its way.

There were also previous rumours that the company would consider a standard S6 Plus too, but those have waned of late and it is thought that only the edge will get a beefier version, bringing that gorgeous wrapped-screen design aesthetic to the larger phone market.

So we’ve decided to round-up all of the rumours and speculation so far to give you an idea of what, where and when the Galaxy S6 edge Plus might appear. We’ll also regularly update this feature as and when more speculation surfaces. read more

Customers Angry Carphone Hack Kept ‘Secret’

Some customers say they should have been informed of a huge hack when it was first discovered on Wednesday, not three days later.

Carphone Warehouse customers are asking why the company took three days to inform them of a data breach that may have compromised the personal details of up to 2.4 million people.

Users took to Twitter to vent their frustration that customers were not immediately made aware when the breach was first discovered on Wednesday.

“How timely of carphone warehouse to delay announcement of hacking to weekend when banking services are most difficult to contact,” Menna Flavell tweeted. read more

A new Train Signalling System Being Tried Out In The UK Could Be Vulnerable To Cyber Attacks

A new Train Signalling System Being Tried Out In The UK Could Be Vulnerable To Cyber Attacks

A new railway signalling system being trialled in the UK could be vulnerable to a cyber attack which could cause a train crash, a government adviser has warned

Professor David Stupples told the BBC the European Rail Traffic Management System, a new digital system aimed to make lines safer, could be exposed to malicious software, or malware, used to cause a “nasty accident”.

The internet security expert at City University said government ministers feared the possible threat of hacking and the biggest could come from an insider.

“It’s the clever malware that actually alters the way the train will respond. So, it will perhaps tell the system the train is slowing down, when it’s speeding up,” he said. read more
