100 immigrants caught in Channel Tunnel

100 immigrants caught in Channel Tunnel

Another group of up to 100 illegal immigrants has been caught trying to get into Britain through the Channel Tunnel, Eurotunnel said today.

Passenger services through the tunnel were delayed for several hours and freight services were suspended overnight after the group was caught inside the Eurotunnel compound at Coquelle, north of Calais, at around 9.45pm last night, a spokeswoman for the company said.

The attempt came as a newspaper report claimed Home Secretary David Blunkett had asked the French government to shut down the nearby Red Cross camp at Sangatte, where it is believed the group was from.

Forty-four Afghans were found trying to walk through the tunnel on Wednesday. read more

Theresa May: only migrants with jobs should be let in to UK

Theresa May: only migrants with jobs should be let in to UK

Home secretary calls for rethink of principle of free movement in EU, blaming borderless system for exacerbating Europe’s migration crisis.

Only European migrants with a job lined up should be allowed into the UK, the home secretary, Theresa May, has said, arguing that current levels of migration are unsustainable.

Her comments came after figures from the Office for National Statistics showed migration to Britain had hit a record high, reaching 330,000 in the past year to March. The rise comes despite a pledge made by David Cameron in 2011 to bring down immigration to the tens of thousands.

“Net migration at that volume is simply unsustainable,” May wrote in an editorial in the Sunday Times. “It puts pressure on infrastructure, such as housing and transport – and public services, such as schools and hospitals.” read more

Mr Cameron told MPs he had already chaired a committee meeting in Whitehall about the review, which is being led by immigration minister Mark Harper.

He was responding to a question from Tory MP Mark Spencer, who had declared that the welfare state and NHS exist to support Britons who “fall on difficult times”.
