As the countdown begins to the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has revealed details of how the Paralympic Flame will be created and the route it will take during the 24-hour Torch Relay.

During the 24 hour Paralympic Torch Relay, the five team members will each carry their own Torch, passing the Flame between one another, as they complete their section of the Relay. The Torch has been created to represent modernity and innovation, with a mirrored finish reflecting the light of the Flame and teams of Torchbearers that carry it.

On Wednesday 22 August, with just one week to go to the Games, four Flames will be lit at the summit of the highest peaks of the four UK nations on Wednesday 22 August.Groups of disabled and non-disabled Scouts will ascend Scafell Pike (England), Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa (Wales), Ben Nevis (Scotland) and Slieve Donard (Northern Ireland) where they will use the traditional technique of rubbing flint to create sparks and kindle a flame.Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: ‘By creating the four Flames through human endeavour at the four highest peaks in the UK we will ensure that the spirit of each home nation is represented in the Paralympic Flame.’The Flames will then be transferred to each nation’s capital city where they will each become the focus for a day of Paralympic celebrations. On Tuesday 28 August the Flames will be united in Stoke Mandeville – the spiritual home of the Paralympic Movement – to create the London 2012 Paralympic Flame. read more

China ran Serbia off their feet at Earls Court as they got their London 2012 women’s Volleyball campaign off to a winning start.

Yu Juemin’s side were the most impressive performers across the first two games played, earning a 3-1 win.

With Serbia boasting a front row of Brankica Mihajlovic, Ivana Djerisolo and Maja Ognjenovic that amounted to just shy of 20 feet in height, China were never going to win too many points at the net early on and so it proved as they lost the first set 25-16.

But the Serbian resilience started to tire quickly in the second set and, with libero Xian Zhang cleaning up well on the floor, China got some momentum and edged it 25-18. read more

Russia’s women saw off a spirited fightback from Angola to register a 30-27 victory in the opening Handball match of London 2012 at the Copper Box.

The Europeans, who were silver medallists at the Beijing 2008 Games, were cruising to the points in Group A as they led 19-11 in the early exchanges of the second half, but a golden spell by the African champions saw them level at 23-23.

However, Russia regrouped and flexed their muscles to get over the finishing line by a three-goal margin, Liudmila Postnova top-scoring with five goals and Liudmila Bodnieva, Tatiana Khmyrova and Ekaterina Davydenko all grabbing four. read more
