Online UK Passport Application Fee Set to Exceed £100

Online UK Passport Application Fee Set to Exceed £100

The UK government is poised to increase the online passport application fee beyond the £100 mark for the first time, signaling a significant cost hike for travelers. Adult applicants will see fees jump from £94.50 to £102, while children’s fees will rise from £61.50 to £66.50 under the proposed changes.

Government Justifies 8% Fee Increase

The Home Office emphasizes that this 8% increase aims to align the passport service costs with the users rather than relying on taxpayer funding. The new fee structure is designed to help cover the expenses of processing applications, providing consular support overseas—including for lost or stolen passports—and managing British citizens at UK borders.

These changes are scheduled to take effect on 8 April, pending approval from Parliament.

New Fees for Different Application Methods and Locations

Applicants sending paper applications within the UK will face a rise from £107 to £115.50 for adults, and from £74 to £80 for children. The premium one-day service will climb from £222 to £239.50.

For those applying from abroad, online passport fees will increase to £116.50 for adults (up from £108) and £75.50 for children (previously £70). Paper applications submitted overseas will cost £130 for adults, up from £120.50, while children’s fees will rise from £82.50 to £89.

Application Processing Times and Travel Advice

The standard passport renewal process in the UK typically takes up to three weeks, assuming all required information is correctly provided. The Home Office urges travelers to apply well in advance of their planned journeys to avoid delays.

Recent Trends in Passport Pricing

This upcoming increase follows earlier hikes of 7% in 2024 and 9% in 2023, reflecting a steady upward trend in passport application costs.
