Here you will find archaeological remains that were uncovered in the area, paintings of local scenery, centuries-old household objects, costumes, and displays on the 1471 Battle of Barnet and the Victorian era. Items date back to medieval times, when Barnet Fair first came into being, an event that attracted many visitors and led to the development of many coaching inns on what is now the Great North Road. This sleepy borough has had a more interesting past than you might initially think; its location en route to London meant it was a common stopover point for many visitors, including Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys and members of the royal family who all stayed in the area during their travels. Those wanting to research their family tree can do so by exploring the museum’s archive; additionally the shop sells maps, books of historical interest and postcards. Parking is available at the shopping centre and entry to the museum is free, but be aware that is only opens from Tuesday to Thursday and on Saturdays.
