The Parole Board has approved the release of Lea Rusha, a key figure in Britain’s most audacious cash robbery, the infamous Securitas heist, which saw £53 million stolen in 2006.

Disguised Kidnapper Behind £53M Securitas Robbery Set for Release
Rusha, now 53, played a sinister role in the crime, donning prosthetics and a fake ginger beard to impersonate a police officer. Alongside an accomplice, he abducted Colin Dixon, the depot manager in Tonbridge, Kent, and his family at gunpoint.

The gang then proceeded to hold depot staff hostage, forcing them at gunpoint to load an astonishing £53 million in cash into a 7.5-tonne lorry in February 2006. Despite the passage of nearly two decades, Kent police confirmed last month that over £30 million remains missing, and the investigation is still active.

Convictions and Sentences
In 2008, Rusha was convicted at the Old Bailey for conspiracy to commit robbery, kidnapping, and possession of firearms, alongside four other men. The heist’s mastermind, former cage fighter Lee Murray, received a prison sentence in Morocco, while Paul Allen was extradited to the UK and jailed for his part in the crime.

Rusha received an indefinite sentence with a minimum 15-year term. He was initially released in June 2024 but was recalled in December the same year after violating his licence conditions. Following a private hearing last month, the Parole Board determined he should be freed again, subject to strict licence requirements.
Parole Board’s Decision: Progress and Protection
The Parole Board weighed Rusha’s criminal history, behaviour on licence, and rehabilitation progress while incarcerated. Their official statement declared:
“After considering the circumstances of his offending and time on licence, the progress made while in custody and the evidence presented at the hearing, the panel was satisfied that imprisonment was no longer necessary for the protection of the public.”
Although the panel did not find every aspect of Rusha’s testimony fully convincing, they acknowledged significant rehabilitation and concluded he meets the legal criteria for release.
Ongoing Fallout from the Heist
The aftermath of the Securitas robbery continues to reverberate. Last year, three men were convicted for conspiring to murder Paul Allen after his release from an 18-year sentence. Allen remains paralysed from the chest down following a 2019 shooting at his home in Woodford, East London.
