Paul Hollywood, the renowned Bake Off judge, aggressively tailgated drivers at speeds nearing 100mph on the M25 to rush his ailing cat to the vet, a court heard. Surrey Police recorded his Land Rover Defender traveling at 96mph but believe the vehicle hit speeds exceeding 105mph during the January 9 incident.
Reckless Driving in Heavy Traffic
PC Alexander McAlpine testified that Hollywood’s driving displayed a pattern of intimidation, as he “repeatedly bullied other vehicles out of its way” by tailgating dangerously close—often within less than five metres. This aggressive behavior forced other cars to move lanes amid congested afternoon traffic.
The officer pursued Hollywood’s vehicle, reaching a top speed of approximately 105mph on the M26 and maintaining speeds above 90mph for an extended duration. Such reckless driving raised serious safety concerns on the busy motorway.
Emergency Justification and Legal Consequences
When stopped, Hollywood attributed his urgency to a pet emergency, explaining he was rushing his unwell cat to veterinary care. Despite this, he faced penalties for speeding.
Last week, Hollywood pleaded guilty to speeding, receiving five penalty points on his license and a fine totaling £530. Although initially charged with driving without due care and attention, he denied this allegation, and the prosecution dropped the charge.
Legal Representation Comments
Peter Csemiczky, representing Hollywood from Hickman and Rose law firm, told Worthing Magistrates’ Court: “Mr Hollywood accepts he was driving too fast. He was rushing home to get his unwell cat to the vet. He understands this is no excuse and apologises for his actions. He understands and accepts that he will be punished.”
