Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi has issued a public apology for his previous remarks defending Mason Greenwood, calling him a “good guy.” The apology marks De Zerbi’s first statement since taking charge of Spurs, addressing the backlash his comments sparked among fans and the wider community.

De Zerbi’s Controversial Remarks on Greenwood Spark Outcry
In November, while Greenwood was still facing serious allegations, De Zerbi described the player as someone who had paid a “heavy price” and expressed sadness over the public perception of Greenwood. At the time, he said he knew a “totally different person” from the one portrayed in the media.
Greenwood, who transferred from Manchester United to Marseille in 2024 after rape and assault charges were dropped, remains a divisive figure. The Crown Prosecution Service dismissed the charges in February 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.

Fan Backlash Prompts De Zerbi’s Clarification
Since De Zerbi’s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur this week, several fan groups have voiced strong opposition to his appointment, specifically highlighting his past defense of Greenwood. In response, De Zerbi addressed the issue candidly during his first interview with Tottenham’s in-house media.
A Sincere Apology and Commitment to Vulnerable Groups
Speaking in Italian, De Zerbi emphasized his lifelong commitment to standing up for the vulnerable. He stated, “I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly. In my life, I have always stood up for those who are more vulnerable, more fragile.”
He continued, “Those who know me well understand that I am not someone who would compromise ethics just to win more games or titles. I sincerely apologize to anyone I offended with my previous comments. As a father to a daughter, I am deeply sensitive to these matters.”
De Zerbi expressed hope that with time, people would understand his intentions were never to minimize the gravity of the accusations or the broader issue of violence.
Context of Greenwood’s Legal Case
The charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February 2023 after the prosecution faced a withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence came to light. This legal resolution allowed Greenwood to continue his career, culminating in his move to Marseille.
