James Holder, the co-founder of the renowned fashion brand Superdry, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of raping a woman following a night out in Gloucestershire.
Harsh Sentence Delivered at Bristol Crown Court
The 54-year-old Cheltenham resident was convicted of rape last week at Gloucester Crown Court, sitting in Cirencester. Although acquitted of assault by penetration, the court held him accountable for a “despicable piece of sexual violence,” as stated by the judge during sentencing at Bristol Crown Court on Thursday.
Details of the Crime Revealed During Trial
The jury heard that after spending an evening at a bar in Cheltenham, Holder and a friend arrived uninvited at the victim’s home. Holder took a brief rest on the woman’s bed before calling her into the bedroom where he committed the assault in the early hours of May 7, 2022.
The victim testified that she pleaded and cried for Holder, a married father of two, to stop, but he persisted. Her ordeal ended only when she managed to flee the room. Holder left the premises shortly thereafter.
Holder’s Denial Rejected by Jury
Holder maintained that the sexual encounter was consensual, but the jury rejected his claims and delivered a guilty verdict on May 1. Throughout the trial, the victim’s testimony painted a harrowing picture of violation and disregard for her autonomy.
Judge Condemns Holder’s Sense of Entitlement
During sentencing, Recorder David Chidgey condemned Holder’s actions, stating, “It was about entitlement, it was about your sense of entitlement and your sense of doing what you wanted and your causal disregard for the victim’s absolute right to say what she wanted to do with her own body.”
Holder appeared remotely via video link from HMP Hewell and showed no visible reaction as the sentence was pronounced.
