Golders Green faced a shocking act of violence when three individuals were charged for setting fire to four volunteer ambulances belonging to the Jewish charity, Hatzola. The arson attack, which erupted in the early hours of March 23, devastated the emergency service vehicles and rattled the local community.
Details of the Arson Incident and Charges
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, both British nationals from Leyton, face charges of arson with recklessness to endanger life. Alongside them, a 17-year-old boy from Walthamstow, holding dual British and Pakistani nationality, has been charged with the same offence. Due to legal restrictions, the minor’s identity remains protected.
All three suspects were apprehended on Wednesday at separate locations across East London and are scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court this Saturday.
Investigation and Community Impact
Although Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) launched an investigation into the attack, authorities have not classified the incident as terrorism. The fire ignited gas canisters stored inside the ambulances, causing multiple explosions that shattered windows, including those of a nearby synagogue. Local residents were awakened by the loud blasts and evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure.
Government Response and Community Support
In response, the government promptly supplied Hatzola with four replacement ambulances and pledged to cover the costs for new vehicles to restore the service’s critical operations. A community fundraising appeal has since raised over £3.2 million to secure safer premises for the charity’s ambulance service in Golders Green, reflecting strong local and national solidarity.
Ongoing Policing Measures
Alongside the three charged individuals, two other men aged 45 and 47, previously arrested last Wednesday, have been released on bail pending further investigation.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who oversees policing in North West London, announced the implementation of a targeted security strategy in vulnerable areas, including Golders Green. This approach includes a significant increase in police presence supported by highly visible armed patrols aimed at deterring anyone intent on harming the community.
