A wave of violent attacks erupted in Londonderry as a 13-year-old boy was taken into custody following a series of petrol bomb, bottle, and firework assaults targeting police vehicles. This latest confrontation underscores the escalating unrest plaguing the city’s streets.
Violence Erupts Across Bishop Street and Surrounding Areas
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported that antisocial activity has intensified in the Bishop Street, The Fountain, and Nailors Row districts over recent weeks. On Tuesday evening, officers responded to reports of masked youths causing disturbances around 5:30 p.m.
PSNI swiftly closed Bishop Street to contain the disorder. During the confrontation, attackers hurled numerous glass bottles, set off fireworks, and launched petrol bombs along with masonry at police vehicles, inflicting damage and endangering lives.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities apprehended a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of riotous behavior. After initial questioning, he was released on bail pending further inquiries. The police have launched a thorough investigation to identify all participants and vowed to hold every offender accountable.
Inspector Ferriby of Derry City and Strabane emphasized that this incident fits a troubling pattern of youth-driven unrest. “Several individuals, many masked, have been involved in disturbances on multiple nights including the 20th and 21st of April, the 4th of May, and now again tonight,” he stated.
Separate Attack on Police During Band Parade
In a related episode on Friday evening, PSNI condemned reckless attacks in another part of Londonderry. Approximately 15 youths with covered faces gathered near the interface on Irish Street as a band parade passed through. They launched paint bombs, heavy masonry, and petrol bombs at officers, causing minor damage to two police vehicles.
These violent episodes highlight a disturbing escalation in confrontations between masked youths and law enforcement across Londonderry, raising urgent concerns about public safety and community stability.
