Harriet Harman Calls for Change Despite Backing Starmer’s Leadership
Sir Keir Starmer must stay on as prime minister following Labour’s devastating election losses, but he faces urgent pressure to enact significant changes. Former deputy leader Harriet Harman stresses that continuing with the status quo is unacceptable amid the party’s historic setbacks.
Labour endured a catastrophic blow across England, Scotland, and Wales. The party lost more than 1,300 council seats in England alone, resulting in the collapse of its control over 37 local authorities. For the first time since 1999, Labour surrendered the Welsh Senedd, while struggles persisted in Scotland. Meanwhile, political rivals like Reform UK and the Green Party surged, capitalizing on Labour’s vulnerability from both ends of the political spectrum.
Urgent Call for a New Direction
Speaking on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast, Baroness Harman emphasized the need for Starmer to rally consensus around a bold new government agenda. “More of the same is not acceptable,” she declared. “The country deserves a government that not only delivers its manifesto promises but offers clear direction and hope for the future.”
Harman added, “It’s not just about fulfilling basic duties—it’s about crafting a compelling narrative that assures people the nation is moving forward.”
Leadership Challenges Loom but No Action Yet
Speculation swirled before the elections about a potential leadership challenge to Starmer, with figures like Angela Rayner, Wes Streeting, and Andy Burnham considered possible contenders. Yet, despite Labour’s poor performance becoming evident, no formal challenge has emerged.
Starmer remained resolute, acknowledging the “very tough” results but refusing to abandon his role. “I’m not going to walk away from those challenges and plunge the country into chaos,” he insisted.
Harman Backs Starmer’s Resolve but Demands Accountability
Baroness Harman affirmed Starmer’s determination to deliver the promised changes since his election less than two years ago. She noted the discussions about challenges were largely speculative and that none of the podcast hosts expected a leadership bid to materialize.
“That doesn’t mean there isn’t considerable concern or that the ongoing talk isn’t undermining and distracting the government,” she said. “But since no challenge is forthcoming—even after the May elections—Labour MPs face a clear choice.”
Harman urged Labour members to unite behind Starmer’s leadership to improve government performance and fulfill campaign commitments. “They must listen, learn hard lessons, and move beyond internal strife to focus on practical, forward-looking solutions,” she concluded.
