Former Lostprophets Frontman Targeted Over Money in HMP Wakefield
Ian Watkins, the disgraced former lead singer of Lostprophets, faced relentless bullying and violent threats over money in the days leading up to his death inside HMP Wakefield. Serving a 29-year sentence for horrific child sex offences, Watkins died in October after a brutal stabbing attack.
Witnesses at Leeds Crown Court described how Watkins emerged from his cell “covered in blood from the neck down,” revealing the brutal extent of the assault. Two inmates—Rico Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 44—stand accused of murder and possession of a makeshift weapon, charges they firmly deny.
Prison Officer Details Threatening Letters Over Money Demands
Prison officer Simon Rothwell testified that Watkins was vulnerable inside the prison walls, as other inmates knew of his financial resources from his past music career. Rothwell shared how Watkins confided in him, building a rapport that enabled the officer to learn about threatening letters demanding money.
One letter explicitly warned: “Ian, you’ve got until Saturday to pay for my Hi-Fi, lamp and fan. If you don’t pay by then, I promise you, I will get your head cracked open, you snitch.” The letter demanded £500 and threatened violent retaliation if the deadline was missed.
Another letter claimed the sender had their possessions confiscated after Watkins allegedly got him “kicked off the wing.” Rothwell collected these letters under the guise of delivering a colouring book and advised Watkins to isolate in his cell over the weekend for safety.
Although Watkins expressed confidence that he would be okay, Rothwell raised alarms with prison management, requesting “extra patrols and extra checks” to protect the vulnerable inmate.
Graphic Testimonies Paint Horrific Scene Post-Attack
A plumber working inside the prison recounted seeing Watkins clutching his neck in the doorway of his cell immediately after the stabbing on October 11. The man noticed blood pooling on the right side of Watkins’ face and described his expression as potentially “shocked” before Watkins retreated back inside.
Another worker vividly described Watkins emerging with a massive open wound stretching from his collarbone to his jaw, drenched in blood. Staff rushed to his aid swiftly after this harrowing sight.
CCTV Footage Shows Gedel Near Cell After Attack
Court footage reveals Gedel walking away from Watkins’ cell shortly after the assault. He briefly converses with co-defendant Dodsworth as they move down the corridor. Moments later, at 9:16 a.m., Watkins is captured stepping out in a blood-stained T-shirt, glancing cautiously before returning inside.
Prosecutors argue Gedel inflicted three stab wounds to Watkins’ head and neck. Watkins had been imprisoned since December 2013, convicted of multiple sex crimes, including the attempted rape of a fan’s infant child.
The trial continues as the court examines the full circumstances surrounding the attack and the violent prison dynamics that led to the former rock star’s tragic death.
