Counter-terrorism officers have detained a 45-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman in connection with a deliberate arson attack on a former synagogue in East London. The pair now face suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and remain in police custody as the investigation intensifies.
Deliberate Fire at Former Synagogue in Whitechapel
In the early hours of Tuesday, a fire broke out at a former synagogue located on Nelson Street, Whitechapel. The London Fire Brigade alerted the Metropolitan Police at 5:16 a.m., prompting a swift response. Authorities confirmed that CCTV footage captured the blaze being deliberately ignited just minutes before the fire brigade arrived.
Though the fire caused only minor damage—primarily affecting a set of gates and the lock at the building’s entrance—the incident has sparked a thorough investigation. Police are treating the arson alongside a series of recent attacks targeting Jewish sites across London since late March.
Counter Terrorism Policing Steps Up Investigation
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing at the Metropolitan Police, emphasized the significance of the arrests. “These detentions mark a crucial advance in our probe into this attack,” she said. “Our investigation continues with the goal of bringing all those responsible for this and related assaults on Jewish, Israeli, and Iranian locations to justice.”
“We categorically reject and will not tolerate these hateful attacks against communities,” Commander Flanagan added, underscoring the force’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups.
Community Protection Measures Amplified
The former synagogue, which was scheduled for auction earlier this year, recently attracted interest from a Muslim group aiming to transform the site into a mosque and community center. This context adds layers to the ongoing community tensions.
In response to escalating threats, the Metropolitan Police unveiled a dedicated community protection team consisting of 100 additional officers. Initially, this unit will concentrate on shielding the Jewish community, recognized as facing some of the highest levels of hate crime alongside serious terrorist and hostile state threats.

This latest arson attack follows a disturbing pattern of assaults, including an earlier fire targeting Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green during March. Since then, counter-terrorism operations have led to the arrest of 33 individuals linked to various related incidents.
