Jason Beasley, chief security advisor for Europe and the Middle East, highlights a disturbing example involving hospitals. Criminals began calling hospital employees directly, seeking out nurses by name. These attackers then revealed intimate personal details such as home addresses and social security numbers, signaling to the victims that they were being closely monitored.
“They gave them street addresses, they gave them social security numbers, they did all of these things to make people really feel like they were being watched,” Beasley explains. The calculated intimidation tactics aimed to unsettle frontline healthcare workers, creating a high-stress environment where employees feared for their safety both online and offline.

These threats serve a dual purpose. Beyond the psychological impact, they seek to coerce victims into complying with ransom demands or other malicious requests. The healthcare sector, already vulnerable due to its critical role and sensitive data, has become a prime target for such aggressive cybercriminal behavior.
From Digital Control to Physical Danger

This separation between hacker and enforcer also obscures accountability, making it harder to trace violent acts back to the original perpetrators.

The dark intersection of cybercrime and physical violence is especially pronounced in the cryptocurrency space. The anonymity and high value inherent in crypto investments have attracted violent criminal tactics.
In a notable case from May last year, French authorities rescued the father of a cryptocurrency millionaire who had been kidnapped and held for ransom in a suburb of Paris. This incident underscores the lengths to which criminals will go to extract wealth in the crypto realm.
