Shocking Abuse Unfolded in Just Months
Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old former high school teacher from Blackpool, stands accused of heinously sexually assaulting and ultimately smothering his adopted 13-month-old son, Preston Davey. The chilling case revealed that Preston endured relentless physical and sexual abuse during the brief four months he was under Varley’s care.
Alongside Varley, his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, faces multiple charges, including sexual assault and causing or allowing Preston’s death. Both men vehemently deny all allegations.
From Healthy Infant to Tragic Victim
Jurors at Preston Crown Court were told Preston was a “perfectly healthy boy” prior to his adoption in April 2023. However, within months, his health deteriorated alarmingly. The toddler required hospital admission three times before his tragic death on July 27, 2023.
Emergency responders found Preston unconscious and in cardiac arrest when Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley rushed him to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Despite frantic efforts to save him, Preston was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
Devastating Injuries Reveal Grim Reality
A post-mortem examination exposed the extent of Preston’s suffering: 40 traumatic injuries including 30 external bruises, a fractured upper left arm, and internal bruising in his mouth and throat. Medical experts concluded his cause of death was acute upper airway obstruction, likely caused by smothering with a hand or soft material, or by the insertion of an object into his mouth.
Prosecution Details Sinister Abuse and Neglect
Peter Wright KC, prosecuting, described the case as far from an unforeseen accident. He told the jury of twelve, “This tragedy stemmed from a deeply disturbing pattern of abuse and neglect.”
Evidence showed Varley sexually assaulted Preston on the day of his death, inflicting internal injuries while McGowan-Fazakerley was at work. Wright asserted McGowan-Fazakerley not only knew about the abuse but actively participated.
Police uncovered damning evidence on Varley’s phone, including videos and photographs documenting the abuse. One video recorded earlier that day captured Preston lying on a bed exhibiting clear signs of respiratory distress.
Jurors were cautioned to prepare themselves before viewing graphic images of Preston taken following the assaults.
Charges and Courtroom Scene
Varley faces an extensive list of charges: murder, manslaughter, multiple counts of assault by penetration, cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault of a child, and numerous counts involving indecent images. McGowan-Fazakerley denies charges of allowing Preston’s death, child cruelty, and sexual assault.
In court, Varley appeared composed, dressed in a cream suit and open-necked white shirt, his shoulder-length hair streaked blonde. Beside him, McGowan-Fazakerley wore a green top and jeans. Preston’s mother sat nearby in the public gallery, visibly affected.
