Tragic Collision in Accrington Leads to Murder Investigation
A devastating hit-and-run incident in the heart of Accrington, Lancashire, ended with the death of Matthew Weller, 44, after he was struck by a vehicle late Wednesday night.
At approximately 10 p.m., Mr. Weller was hit by a Volkswagen Passat while walking in the town center. The vehicle fled the scene and was later discovered abandoned about a mile away, intensifying the urgency of the police investigation.
Multiple Arrests Made as Police Pursue Justice
Following the incident, authorities swiftly arrested five men on suspicion of murder. The group includes three 17-year-olds, an 18-year-old from Blackburn, and a 23-year-old local from Accrington. All remain in police custody as the inquiry advances.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Appeal
Detective Superintendent Mark Dickinson, leading the major investigation team at Lancashire Constabulary, emphasized the active nature of the case. “We have made significant progress and have arrested suspects, but our investigation continues vigorously,” he stated.
He urged residents and witnesses to come forward with any information, particularly mobile phone recordings, CCTV, or dashcam footage that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
“The community is understandably shaken by this tragedy,” added Dickinson. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and delivering justice for Mr. Weller and his family.”
