MP Jess Phillips Voices Frustration Over Incremental Policy Changes
Jess Phillips has openly challenged the leadership of the Prime Minister, highlighting the slow pace of meaningful reform under his tenure. In a candid letter, Phillips revealed that significant change in her role only came after she issued threats in response to what she described as “catastrophic mistakes.”

Phillips acknowledged the Prime Minister as a fundamentally good man who cares about important issues. However, she emphasized that good intentions alone have proven insufficient. “The desire not to have an argument means we rarely make an argument, leaving opportunities for progress stalled and delayed,” she wrote.
Delayed Legislation on Child Safety Sparks Criticism
Phillips recounted her year-long effort to convince the Prime Minister to consider legislation banning children in the UK from taking naked images of themselves. She labeled this as the very definition of incremental change—far from bold or decisive action.
“The announcement was meant to be in March, I’m still on a promise this will happen in June. I’ve given up believing it,” Phillips stated emphatically. “How many children were left without a safety net during the delays while we worried about tech bosses?”
Highlighting the urgency of the issue, Phillips stressed that while she respects Sir Keir’s deep commitment, effective leadership demands “deeds, not words.”
She warned, “I’m not sure we are grasping this rare opportunity with the gusto that’s needed. I cannot keep waiting around for a crisis to push for faster progress.”
