Fatal Attack and Explosion Rock North London Home
Clifton George, 45, stands charged with the brutal stabbing death of Annabel Rook, 46, daughter of retired Old Bailey judge Peter Rook. The horrific incident unfolded during a violent argument at their Stoke Newington residence on June 17 last year.
George admitted manslaughter but vehemently denies murder, claiming the fatal stabbing was unintentional. However, the court heard that after attacking Ms. Rook, George attempted to destroy their home by igniting a gas canister, causing a massive explosion that nearly consumed the property.
Brutal Assault Escalates to Deadly Stabbing
At Snaresbrook Crown Court, prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC detailed the chilling sequence of events. The couple’s strained relationship erupted into violence when Ms. Rook told George to leave the house.
“During the argument, George punched Ms. Rook, attempted to strangle her, then retrieved a kitchen knife,” said Emlyn Jones. “He returned to the living room and stabbed her repeatedly, ultimately murdering her in a fit of rage.”
Ms. Rook suffered 22 stab wounds, including a fatal blow through the heart, as revealed by forensic evidence after the explosion.
Explosion Follows Stabbing as George Tries to Destroy Evidence
Following the stabbing, George ignited a fire inside the home and set off a gas canister, causing an “enormous explosion.” He was later found in the garden, severely injured and attempting to stab himself with broken glass.
When questioned by police, George admitted to killing Ms. Rook. “He said, ‘my wife’ was inside the house but immediately added, ‘she was dead’,” the prosecutor recounted. “When asked how he knew, he replied, ‘because I killed her.’”
Relationship Troubles and Motive Under Scrutiny
In a police interview, George confessed he “lost it” after discovering Ms. Rook had lied to him. Though the couple never married, they had cohabited for over ten years amid a turbulent relationship.
The prosecution has rejected George’s manslaughter plea, maintaining the murder charge. The jury must now weigh the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing and assess the complexities of their volatile partnership.
