The Rise of Catherine West: From Australian Roots to British Politics
West’s political journey began far from London. Born in the town of Mansfield, Australia—110 miles northeast of Melbourne—she relocated to the UK in 1998 after her husband secured a position at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. With fluency in five languages, including Mandarin developed during her time teaching English in Nanjing, China, West brings a global perspective to British politics.
Before moving to the UK, West worked as a social worker at a refuge for survivors of child sex abuse in Darwin, northern Australia. Her commitment to public service deepened when she became a parliamentary case worker for David Lammy following his election as an MP in 2000.
Local Leadership and Parliamentary Career
Encouraged by Lammy, West entered local politics and was elected as a Labour councillor in Islington in 2002. She served on the council for 12 years and led it from 2010 to 2013. Her national political career took off in 2015 when she won the seat of Hornsey and Wood Green—now Hornsey and Friern Barnet—in North London.
Shadow Minister and Ministerial Roles
West served as a shadow foreign minister under Jeremy Corbyn but was dismissed after defying the party whip to vote in favour of the UK remaining in the European single market post-Brexit. When Starmer assumed Labour leadership in 2020, she resumed her role as shadow foreign minister.
In 2024, West was appointed junior minister for the Indo-Pacific, reuniting professionally with David Lammy, then foreign secretary. However, she exited the government in a reshuffle last September following the resignation of Angela Rayner over tax controversies.
