Beloved Son Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle
A devastating hit-and-run in Accrington has ended in tragedy after a 44-year-old man succumbed to injuries sustained when a car struck him. Matthew Weller, described by family as a “much-loved son,” passed away in hospital following the collision on Wednesday night.
Suspect Charged and Court Appearance
Muhammad Haarith, a 22-year-old from Accrington, faces a charge of murder in connection with Mr. Weller’s death. After the incident, the driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle—a Volkswagen Passat—abandoned nearby. Authorities have since seized the car for forensic examination.
Haarith appeared before Preston Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, where he was remanded into custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
Family Pays Tribute to Matthew Weller
In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Weller’s family honored his memory: “Matt was a much-loved son, brother, and uncle. He was a passionate music lover and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Rest peacefully, Matt—you will be deeply missed.”
Other Arrests and Police Investigation
Following the incident, police initially detained three teenage boys aged 17 and a young man aged 18 on suspicion of murder. All have since been released on bail as the investigation continues.
