Targeted Support for Off-Grid Residents Facing Soaring Heating Oil Prices
North Lincolnshire Council is stepping up to ease the financial burden on hundreds of households that rely on heating oil by providing a £300 support payment. This move addresses the sharp rise in heating and energy costs that have disproportionately impacted those living off the gas grid.

No Price Caps for Heating Oil Users
Unlike gas and electricity customers whose prices are regulated by Ofgem, households dependent on heating oil face uncapped, often volatile prices. Council leader Rob Waltham emphasized the necessity of this support, stating, “Residents should not be left behind simply because they are off the gas grid.“
Government Backing Amid Global Energy Challenges
In March, the government allocated approximately £50 million to assist households grappling with escalating heating oil expenses, which surged notably following geopolitical tensions stemming from the Iran conflict. This fund underpins local efforts like those in North Lincolnshire to protect vulnerable populations.

Focused Aid for Vulnerable Groups in Rural Areas
Rob Waltham acknowledged the severe financial strain many face: “We know many households have faced significant increases in heating oil costs and for some residents, particularly older people and those on fixed incomes, those rises have caused real concern.” He added, “While some councils have offered very limited support, we have been as generous as possible with the funding allocated to North Lincolnshire because we know the pressure many rural households are under.“
Application Process and Direct Payments
The council is actively contacting eligible households who previously expressed interest and continues to accept applications. Successful applicants will receive the £300 payment directly into their bank accounts, providing swift financial relief.
