AI Empowers Woodworkers with Instant Research
Woodworking, long seen as a hands-on, traditional craft, is embracing the power of generative AI to streamline research and decision-making. During a recent home renovation, expert woodworker Saunders leveraged an AI chatbot to instantly access crucial building regulations, speeding up the planning process.

Yet, Saunders cautions against blind reliance on AI. He emphasizes that verifying materials and tools firsthand remains essential to mastering woodworking’s tactile nature.

From Laser-Cut Sets to AI-Driven Design
Mark Vasilkov, a renowned London propmaker, frequently incorporates wood into his projects. He notes, “The bigger the scale, the higher the likelihood that wood will be involved,” especially in set designs crafted from laser-cut plywood.

In the fast-evolving film industry, Vasilkov relies heavily on the AI image generator Stable Diffusion. This tool allows him to rapidly produce multiple design options for the art department, accelerating creative approvals before construction begins.

Balancing Digital Innovation with Hands-On Craftsmanship
Despite digital advances, many woodworkers still cherish analog methods. Saunders admits he finds digital readouts on machines less helpful and prefers tools that don’t necessarily connect digitally.

“Transitioning fully to digital can sometimes diminish that vital human interaction with the material,” he explains, underscoring the importance of preserving craftsmanship alongside technology.
