Football supporters face a growing threat of fraud as the World Cup fever ignites worldwide. Victims of ticket scams have lost an average of £215, with scammers intensifying their efforts to exploit soaring demand.
Ticket Scams Spike Amid Premier League Season
New research from Lloyds Bank reveals a 36% surge in football ticket scams during the current Premier League season. The study compared fraud cases from October 2025 to March 2026 against the same period the previous year, highlighting a sharp increase in deceptive sales.
Scammers target fans of top clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United, as well as high-profile matches. With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, experts warn of an imminent rise in fraudulent activity centered around the tournament.
FIFA Triples Prices for World Cup Final Tickets
Adding fuel to the frenzy, FIFA has recently tripled the price of prime tickets for the World Cup final, less than five weeks before kickoff. The coveted front category one seats at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium now cost a staggering $32,970 (£24,176), up from $10,990 (£8,000).
These premium prices apply to all seats except those in the wheelchair and easy-access sections, which remain at the previous lower rate.
Key Matches and Ticket Costs
England will face Panama on June 27 at MetLife Stadium, also home to the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets. Tickets for the first semi-final at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, range from $2,705 (£1,984) to $11,130 (£8,164).
The second semi-final in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium features prices between $2,725 (£1,999) and $10,635 (£7,801).
For the USA’s group matches, the priciest seats cost $2,970 (£2,179) for the final game against Turkey, while the second game against Australia offers top tickets at $2,715 (£1,991). The joint hosts kick off their campaign against Paraguay on June 12 at the sleek SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
FIFA Defends Ticket Pricing Amid Backlash
FIFA President Gianni Infantino stood firm on the elevated ticket prices during the Milken Institute Global Conference in California. He explained that the organization operates within a highly developed entertainment market and must apply market-based pricing.
Infantino emphasized that ticket resale is legal in the US, warning that if FIFA sets prices too low, scalpers will resell at even higher rates. “Even though some say our prices are high, resale prices often double ours,” he stated.
Drawing parallels to other US sports, he pointed out that college football tickets easily reach $300 (£220).
Last month, a ticket for the World Cup final appeared on FIFA’s resale platform listed at an astronomical $2,299,998.85 (£1.7 million). When asked about this exorbitant figure, Infantino quipped he would offer the buyer a hot dog and a Coke “to make sure he has a great experience.”
