Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Car Bomb Plot at Northern Ireland Police Station

A dramatic car bomb attempt targeted a police station in Northern Ireland, resulting in a 48-year-old man facing multiple serious charges, including attempted murder. The attack unfolded at Lurgan police station in County Armagh on March 30, shaking the community and igniting a major security response.

Details of the Attack and Charges

Authorities charged the man not only with attempted murder but also with attempting to cause an explosion, hijacking, and possession of explosives. The suspect is scheduled to appear before Craigavon Magistrates’ Court this Friday.

The harrowing incident involved a food delivery driver who was forcibly hijacked and coerced into transporting a “crude but viable” explosive device to the police station. Fortunately, the device failed to detonate, preventing a catastrophic outcome.

New IRA Claims Responsibility

The dissident republican group, New IRA, claimed responsibility for the brazen attack. The group’s actions have drawn widespread condemnation for endangering innocent lives.

Security Response and Arrests

Police swiftly acted, arresting a 48-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy under the Terrorism Act. Additionally, a 39-year-old woman was arrested and charged with obstructing police but was later released unconditionally regarding charges of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender.

Justice Minister Naomi Long emphasized the gravity of the threat, stating the device would have caused devastating damage if it had exploded. She highlighted the determination to maintain security and bring those responsible to justice.

Police Statement on the Attack

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland condemned the attack as “cowardly and widely condemned,” stressing how it endangered innocent lives. The spokesperson reaffirmed the commitment to relentlessly pursue justice against those behind the assault.
