Deadly Explosion Rocks North East London Home
A devastating gas explosion ripped through a Stoke Newington residence last June, unleashing a force so powerful it caused a “mini-earthquake” that shook neighboring homes. The blast resulted from a horrific murder, a court has revealed.
Clifton George, 45, stands accused of murdering his partner Annabel Rook at their shared home in north east London. While George has admitted to killing Ms. Rook and committing arson, he denies murder, claiming a “loss of control” during the incident.

Scenes of Devastation: Floorboards Torn, Roof Blown Off
At Snaresbrook Crown Court, jurors have examined chilling images from the aftermath of the explosion. The blast obliterated floorboards, shattered windows, and ripped the roof off the kitchen extension, leaving the property severely damaged.

Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC detailed the chaos, stating, “The basement, where the explosion originated, lies directly beneath the living room, where Annabel Rook’s body was found. The blast force lifted floorboards, shifted furniture, and inflicted significant damage to the house and its neighbor.”
Neighbours on Dumont Road recounted waking to the deafening explosion, describing it as a “mini-earthquake” that rattled their homes. They discovered cracked adjoining walls, damaged brickwork, and broken bathroom tiles caused by the shockwave.
Brutal Murder Unfolded Amidst Relationship Turmoil
The prosecution alleges that during a heated argument, George became enraged, physically assaulting Ms. Rook by punching and strangling her before stabbing her 22 times, including a fatal wound to the heart. Evidence suggests she had been dead for several hours before the gas explosion occurred.
George later confessed to police that he attempted suicide following the attack, losing consciousness as a result.
Deteriorating Relationship and Final Confrontation
The couple, who cohabited but were unmarried, faced increasing strain. Ms. Rook reportedly informed George she wanted him to move out as part of a trial separation. The prosecution summarized the tragic sequence: “He lost his temper, and in his rage… he murdered Annabel.”
Police Find George Attempting Self-Harm
Upon arrival, officers found George in the garden trying to stab himself with a glass shard, the court heard. The trial is ongoing as jurors continue to weigh the evidence.
