Ed Miliband Champions Shift from Fossil Fuels to Clean Energy
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband declared a bold stance against fossil fuel dependency, emphasizing, “You can’t solve a fossil fuels crisis by doubling down on fossil fuels.” He stressed that transitioning to renewable energy stands as the definitive solution to both soaring energy bills and the escalating climate emergency.

Why Are Electricity Bills Still Sky-High Despite Renewables?
Renewable power sources like wind and solar are producing record amounts of electricity in Britain. Yet, consumers don’t fully benefit from their low operational costs. This discrepancy arises because the current electricity pricing system hinges on the cost of the last unit of electricity needed to meet demand, which often comes from gas-generated power.
This means that when gas prices surge, the entire electricity bill spikes in tandem. Unlike Britain, countries such as Spain and France rely less on gas for electricity generation, making their energy costs less vulnerable to volatile gas markets.
The Role of Gas in Britain’s Energy Mix
Although the government acknowledges the risks of gas dependency, it has decided against a complete overhaul of the pricing system for now. Gas remains crucial for balancing supply when renewable sources like the sun and wind fall short.
Fixed-Price Contracts to Protect Clean Energy Projects
To shield consumers from unpredictable costs, the UK government plans to move older renewable energy projects—responsible for roughly one-third of the nation’s electricity generation—onto fixed-price contracts. These projects will receive payments based on their own renewable energy prices rather than the gas-influenced market price, along with any agreed subsidies.
