A 16-year-old boy has received a youth rehabilitation order after orchestrating a disturbing online campaign that urged teenage girls to inflict self-harm. This calculated abuse spanned over 16 months, exploiting vulnerable victims through social media and dark web platforms.
Manipulative Online Abuse Uncovered
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) revealed the defendant, unnamed for legal reasons, was only 14 when he began targeting primarily teenage girls. He commanded his victims to carve his online username into their skin, demanding photographic proof which he then saved.
His malicious conduct escalated as he pressured these young victims into self-injury, demonstrating a chilling level of control and manipulation through digital means.
Convictions and Sentencing Details
Earlier this year, the teenager pleaded guilty to encouraging self-harm. A subsequent trial at Southampton Youth Court also found him guilty of downloading indecent images of children.
On Monday, the court sentenced him to an 18-month Youth Rehabilitation Order. The order imposes strict restrictions: he is prohibited from accessing Discord, Telegram, and any browsers enabling dark web entry. Additionally, he faces a ban on other social media platforms unless supervised by an adult or for educational purposes. His device use is limited, with a curfew barring access after 10 p.m.
Authorities’ Response and Prevention Measures
Police confiscated an Xbox from the boy’s residence after discovering he used it to maintain the accounts linked to his offenses while out on bail.
Senior prosecutor Lauren McConnell condemned the defendant’s actions: “He deliberately concealed his identity online to manipulate and harm vulnerable individuals. Over 16 months, he encouraged self-harm and downloaded indecent images, inflicting profound psychological damage through his abuse.”
McConnell emphasized the gravity of online offenses, stating, “Crimes committed on the internet inflict harm as severe as those offline. The CPS remains committed to prosecuting anyone exploiting digital platforms to abuse others.”
