Ed Davey Champions Lib Dems as the Moderate Force Amid Political Shifts
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey boldly positioned his party as the stable alternative to the “extremes” represented by Reform UK and the Green Party, celebrating significant electoral advances across England and Scotland.

Substantial Gains in England and Scotland
The Liberal Democrats secured an impressive net increase of 153 councillors in England, capturing control of Stockport and Portsmouth councils. Additionally, they claimed six seats in the Scottish Parliament, marking their strongest performance in nearly two decades north of the border.
Political Landscape in Flux
Despite these successes, the Lib Dems’ gains were more measured compared to the rapid rise of Reform UK and the Greens, who capitalized on voter dissatisfaction with Labour and the Conservatives. Notably, in Hull, a surge for Reform UK cost the Lib Dems control of the council. Similarly, Nigel Farage’s party blocked their ambitions in traditionally Conservative Hampshire.
Ed Davey’s Vision: Moderate Change Rooted in British Values
During a visit to Edinburgh, Sir Ed asserted, “British politics is undergoing a profound transformation. The traditional two-party system has failed, and the electorate is searching for genuine change.”
He continued, “Voters face a choice: the populist extremes on the left and right—Reform UK and the Greens—or authentic, values-driven progress offered by the Liberal Democrats. Many people have embraced this vision, and I am committed to championing it.”
Lib Dems’ Momentum Remains Strong
Responding to concerns about losing momentum, Sir Ed highlighted that this marks the eighth consecutive year of net gains for the Liberal Democrats in English council elections. Coupled with their standout Scottish results, the party’s upward trajectory remains robust and resilient.
