Archbishop of Canterbury and Pope Leo Unite in Historic Vatican Prayer

A Groundbreaking Encounter in the Heart of the Vatican

Dame Sarah Mullally, the first woman to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury, shattered centuries-old barriers by praying alongside Pope Leo XIV in a landmark meeting at the Vatican. This unprecedented event signals a new chapter in Anglican-Catholic relations, blending tradition with a spirit of unity.

A Meeting of Faith and Dialogue

On Monday morning, Dame Sarah, who assumed leadership of the Church of England earlier this March, engaged in a private dialogue and prayer session with Pope Leo in his personal library. She presented the pontiff with a unique gift—a jar of honey harvested from the beehives at Lambeth Palace Garden in London, symbolizing the sweetness of newfound fellowship.

The spiritual encounter continued in the intimate setting of the Chapel of Urban VIII, nestled within the Apostolic Palace—the epicenter of the Holy See. Here, the two leaders prayed together, bridging centuries of theological divergence.

Addressing Divides with Hope

During her address, Dame Sarah acknowledged the profound challenges both churches face, particularly around the issue of women’s ordination—a topic on which Anglican and Catholic doctrines diverge sharply. Despite these differences, she emphasized shared hopes, telling the Pope, “You have spoken powerfully about the many injustices in our world today, but you have spoken even more powerfully about hope.”

She extended an earnest invitation for Pope Leo to visit the United Kingdom, assuring him of a warm welcome from the Church of England.

Building on a Legacy of Shared Prayer

Dame Sarah’s four-day pilgrimage to Rome follows the historic visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to the Vatican last October. During that visit, King Charles and Pope Leo made headlines by praying together—a symbolic act of unity that resonated worldwide among Anglicans and Roman Catholics alike.

Dame Sarah reflected on the significance of that moment, telling Pope Leo, “I am mindful, too, of how much His Majesty The King valued his recent visit, especially the shared prayer and spirit of fraternity it embodied.”

Voices for Peace Amid Global Tensions

Both religious leaders have emerged as powerful advocates for peace amid ongoing global conflicts. Pope Leo’s Easter message called urgently for disarmament, imploring “those who have weapons [to] lay them down.” His forthright stance sparked sharp criticism from former US President Donald Trump, who accused the Pope of being “weak on crime” and misaligned in foreign policy.

Undeterred, Pope Leo doubled down, condemning the world’s suffering as being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants.” In solidarity, Dame Sarah publicly endorsed the Pope’s peace appeals, urging all political leaders to exhaust every peaceful and just avenue to resolve conflicts.

Strengthening Anglican-Roman Catholic Relations

Lambeth Palace emphasized that Dame Sarah’s visit is part of a broader mission to deepen Anglican-Roman Catholic ties through prayer, personal engagement, and formal theological dialogue. This historic meeting embodies a hopeful stride toward reconciliation and common purpose.
