Trump Challenges Prince Harry’s Stance on US Role in Ukraine Conflict
Donald Trump fiercely rejected Prince Harry‘s recent remarks on the United States’ involvement in the Ukraine war, asserting the Duke of Sussex “is not speaking for the UK.” The former US president asserted that he himself represented the UK’s interests more authentically than Harry did.
Harry’s Bold Appeal at Kyiv Security Forum
During a surprise visit to Kyiv, marking his third trip to Ukraine since the conflict erupted in 2022, Prince Harry delivered a powerful message at the Kyiv Security Forum. Emphasizing his role as a “humanitarian” and “a soldier who understands service,” Harry made it clear he was not acting as a politician.
He urged American leaders to fulfill their “international treaty obligations” linked to the US’s pivotal role in global security. Harry highlighted the critical nature of the US’s commitment, recalling that Ukraine relinquished its nuclear weapons based on assurances from the United States and other powers that its sovereignty and borders would be respected.
Harry stated, “This is a moment for American leadership, a moment for America, to show that it can honour its international treaty obligations — not out of charity but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability.”
Trump’s Sharp Rebuttal
When asked about Harry’s call for increased US action to end the war, Donald Trump responded dismissively: “Prince Harry? How’s he doing? How’s his wife? Please give her my regards. I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, that’s for sure.”
Royal Visit to US Amid Heightened Tensions
The tension between Trump and Harry’s statements comes just days before the King and Queen Camilla embark on a four-day state visit to the United States. Their visit commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence and includes high-profile events such as a meeting with President Joe Biden and the First Lady, a speech before Congress, a state dinner, and a tribute to the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Trump’s Broader Criticism of UK Leadership
Trump has recently targeted UK political figures, especially Sir Keir Starmer, over the UK’s position on Middle East conflicts and immigration policies. He criticized Starmer’s refusal to grant US access to UK military bases early in the Iran conflict, bluntly declaring, “this is not Winston Churchill we’re dealing with.”
In an interview with Sky’s US correspondent Mark Stone, Trump labeled Britain’s immigration policies “insane” and lamented the deteriorating US-UK special relationship.
