Charismatic Musician Exposed as Serial Sexual Offender
Ross Davidson, the former lead singer of iconic 80s band Spandau Ballet and star of the musical We Will Rock You, received a 14-year prison sentence for a series of brutal sexual offenses. The 38-year-old was convicted of multiple rapes, attempted rape, sexual assaults, and voyeurism against six women over a six-year period from 2013 to 2019.
Multiple Charges and Separate Trials Reveal Shocking Crimes
Using the stage name Ross Wild, Davidson self-identified as “sex positive” and insisted all sexual encounters were consensual. However, juries in two separate trials at Wood Green Crown Court in London found overwhelming evidence to the contrary. He was convicted of two rapes, one attempted rape, three sexual assaults, and two counts of voyeurism.
The court heard that Davidson exploited the vulnerability of his victims, some of whom were asleep and completely unaware during the assaults. He even filmed himself during one of the rapes and other attacks, capturing his predatory behavior on camera. Prosecutor Richard Hearnden described Davidson as a “predator” who believed he was entitled to force sex on women.
Victims’ Harrowing Impact Statements
Several survivors bravely shared the devastating aftermath of Davidson’s crimes. One victim described how her life was “permanently changed,” living with constant fear, anxiety, and mistrust. Another revealed how the trauma led to depression, anxiety, and a drastic change from a sociable personality to an introverted and guarded individual.
Judge Condemns ‘Wholly Disgraceful’ Conduct
The presiding judge acknowledged Davidson’s outward charm and charisma but condemned his reprehensible treatment of women as his career advanced. The victims’ trauma was palpable as three of them attended the sentencing hearing, witnessing justice delivered.
Background: Mental Health and Substance Issues
Davidson’s defense counsel, Charlotte Newell KC, disclosed that the Aberdeen-born singer struggled with undiagnosed and “crippling” ADHD during the period of offenses. She also stated that he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope and now expresses “genuine remorse,” undergoing medical treatment for his conditions.
Senior Prosecutor Praises Victims’ Courage
Senior CPS prosecutor Shikha Verma lauded the victims’ “immense courage” for standing up against a “predatory sex offender,” highlighting the importance of their testimony in securing the conviction.
