Three Suspects in Custody After Devastating Hatzola Ambulance Blaze
Golders Green witnessed a chilling assault on community safety when four ambulances belonging to Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer ambulance service, were deliberately set ablaze in the early hours of March 23. Authorities swiftly arrested two young men and a 17-year-old boy, charging them with reckless arson endangering life.

Arrests and Charges
Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, both British nationals from Leyton, face charges of arson with reckless disregard for human life. Alongside them, a 17-year-old dual British-Pakistani national from Walthamstow was charged with the same offence. All three appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday after being arrested on Wednesday at separate locations across east London.

The Crown Prosecution Service revealed an additional arrest was made at court when officers recognized another man connected to the attack. This individual was immediately taken into custody on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Investigation and Community Impact
Prosecutor Emma Harraway emphasized the severity of the case, stating, “There is significant evidence that this was a premeditated and targeted attack against the Jewish community.”
While investigators have not yet uncovered the motive behind the attack, the Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism. Nevertheless, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) leads the probe given the incident’s nature and potential threats involved.
The fire ignited gas canisters stored within the ambulances, triggering powerful explosions that shattered windows in surrounding homes and the nearby synagogue. Local residents were jolted awake by the blasts, and precautionary evacuations were enforced.

Community Response and Security Measures
In a show of solidarity, the government quickly provided four replacement ambulances to Hatzola and pledged to cover the costs for new vehicles. Meanwhile, a fundraising appeal has amassed over £3.2 million to secure safer premises for the service in Golders Green.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, overseeing policing in northwest London, announced a robust security strategy to protect vulnerable neighborhoods. “We have deployed a bespoke policing plan featuring a substantial increase in officers on the ground, complemented by visible armed patrols to deter anyone intent on harming our communities,” he said.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Hamza Iqbal and Rehan Khan remain in custody, while the 17-year-old is held in youth detention. All three are scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on April 24. Additionally, two other men arrested last week have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
