Brutal Religious Hate Crime Ends in Life Imprisonment
John Ashby, 32, received a life sentence with a minimum of nearly 14 years at Birmingham Crown Court for the savage rape of a Sikh woman in a religiously aggravated attack last October in Walsall. The chilling case involved charges of rape, robbery, intentional strangulation, and religiously aggravated assault.
Targeted Attack After Bus Encounter
The chilling assault began after Ashby spotted his victim while riding the same bus. Prosecutors revealed he deliberately followed the woman, broke into her home, and violently attacked her. Initially denying the charges, Ashby dramatically changed his plea to guilty following a courtroom confrontation where he was told to “sort your s*** out.”

Judge Condemns Ashby as a ‘Deeply Unpleasant Racist and Islamophobe’
During sentencing, High Court judge Mr Justice Pepperall delivered a scathing rebuke. He condemned Ashby’s hateful remarks during the attack as proof of his bigotry, calling him a “deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe.” Addressing the victim and her partner, the judge praised their courage and expressed hope they could rebuild their lives with time and support.

Harrowing Evidence Revealed in Court
Body-worn police footage shown in court captured the victim’s anguish as a female officer comforted her after the assault. The woman, granted anonymity, described the horrifying incident where Ashby called her a “bloody Muslim b****” and boasted about being the “British master” while raping her in the bathroom.
In a police interview video played during the trial, the victim recalled the terrifying encounter: “He had a stick in his hand. I said ‘who are you?’ and screamed. He switched off the light and said, ‘I just want fun with you.’ Then he called me a f****** Muslim b****. I told him, ‘I am not a Muslim, I am a Sikh.’”

Irrefutable Evidence Links Ashby to the Crime
Prosecutors presented compelling DNA evidence, fingerprints on a vape device, and the victim’s positive identification at an identity parade, leaving no doubt Ashby was the attacker.
Judge Highlights Dangerous Nature and Mental Health History
Mr Justice Pepperall acknowledged Ashby’s past mental health issues and psychotic episodes but attributed them to his voluntary drug abuse. The judge warned, “I have no doubt whatever that you are a very dangerous man and that you pose a significant risk to women.”
Victim’s Powerful Statement: “I’m Finally Free”
The woman, in her 20s, delivered a poignant victim personal statement explaining how the attack “changed every part of my life.” Yet, after Ashby’s admission of guilt, she declared, “I now no longer feel trapped. I can begin to live my life again.”
Explosive Courtroom Confrontation Leads to Guilty Plea
During proceedings, Ashby muttered, “this is bulls***,” provoking a member of the Sikh community to confront him directly: “You’re the bulls***. You need to sort your s*** out.” Ashby responded with a vulgar retort, prompting the judge to adjourn. When court resumed, Ashby abruptly pleaded guilty. The man who confronted him later apologized to the judge, who declined to pursue contempt charges.
Prosecutor Calls Attack ‘Deeply Disturbing’ and Fueled by Religious Hatred
Senior Crown Prosecutor Rav Dhillon emphasized the attack’s severity, describing it as “deeply disturbing” and motivated by religious hatred. She highlighted Ashby’s targeting of a stranger, the prolonged violence, and the religious abuse that left the victim traumatised.
“Ashby initially denied these charges before changing his plea part-way through the trial, which reflects the overwhelming strength of the evidence,” Dhillon added.
Sikh Federation Hails Sentence as a Strong Message to Racists
Dabinderjit Singh from the Sikh Federation praised the sentence, saying it sends a powerful warning to all racists who commit violent attacks. He expressed hope the verdict will aid the victim’s healing process following this traumatic ordeal.
