The Royal Arrival Sparks Historic US State Visit
King Charles and Queen Camilla kicked off their landmark state visit to the United States with a warm reception, including a private tea with former President Donald Trump. This marks the first visit of a British monarch to the US since 2007, when Queen Elizabeth II met President George W. Bush.

Day One: A Powerful Start
The royal couple landed at Joint Base Andrews, where they were greeted with military honors and a red carpet welcome. The moment was marked by a ceremonial exchange of national anthems, setting a dignified tone for the visit.

Following their arrival, King Charles and Queen Camilla met with Donald and Melania Trump on the White House South Lawn. The two couples shared warm handshakes and embraces before engaging in a private discussion inside the presidential residence. Photographs captured the Trumps showing the royals around the White House and sharing tea, underscoring the cordial nature of the encounter.

King Charles’ Upcoming Address to Congress
On Tuesday, King Charles will deliver a landmark speech to both houses of US Congress, only the second time a British monarch has done so since Queen Elizabeth II’s address in 1991. Buckingham Palace confirmed the speech will last around 20 minutes and emphasize the enduring alliance between the UK and the US—described as “one of the greatest alliances in human history.”
The King will highlight how “time and again, our two countries have found ways to come together” and stress the deep, decades-long defence, intelligence, and security cooperation.
This address is expected to tactfully acknowledge existing tensions between former President Trump and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, particularly concerning differing views on the US-led conflict with Iran.

A Gentle Yet Significant Start
Royal correspondent Laura Bundock remarked on the “gentle start” to the visit, noting King Charles has never been hosted by a president as unpredictable as Donald Trump. Despite Trump’s well-known admiration for the Royal Family, his outspoken nature makes such encounters uniquely dynamic.

What Lies Ahead: State Dinner, Commemorations, and Celebrations
Later in the visit, the King and Queen will attend a prestigious state dinner at the White House. Their schedule also includes a poignant trip to New York to honor the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, reflecting the shared history and resilience between the nations.
The royal couple will participate in a “block party” in Virginia celebrating 250 years of US independence, a festive event underscoring the longstanding friendship between the countries.
On a lighter note, Queen Camilla will present a specially crafted toy of Winnie the Pooh character Roo to the New York Public Library, completing the beloved collection of Pooh characters treasured by generations.
