Buckingham Palace has emphatically confirmed that King Charles will proceed with his scheduled state visit to the United States, undeterred by the recent gunfire incident at a dinner attended by former President Donald Trump.
Gunshots Disrupt White House Correspondents’ Dinner
On Saturday night, chaos erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Hilton Hotel in Washington DC when gunshots were fired near the ballroom entrance. President Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, were swiftly escorted to safety amid the panic.
The suspected shooter, identified as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, was quickly apprehended by law enforcement. Although an officer sustained an injury, his bulletproof vest prevented serious harm. No other attendees were injured in the incident.
King Charles’ Four-Day State Visit Remains on Track
The alarming event raised immediate concerns about the security of King Charles and Queen Camilla during their upcoming visit. However, Buckingham Palace reassured the public on Sunday evening that the royal trip will proceed as planned.
A Palace statement confirmed: “Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic and acting on government advice, we confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned. The King and Queen are grateful to all involved for their rapid efforts to ensure the visit continues smoothly and look forward to the engagements starting tomorrow.”
While minor security-related adjustments may be made to certain royal events, the overall itinerary remains unchanged.
Robust Security Coordination Between UK and US
Sir Christopher Turner, Britain’s ambassador to the US, emphasized the close collaboration between security teams: “Our respective security teams have been in constant contact for weeks. We remain confident that all necessary measures are in place, and any operational changes will be handled seamlessly.”
Earlier on Sunday, Buckingham Palace confirmed ongoing discussions with the White House to assess the impact of Saturday’s events on the visit’s operational planning. A spokesperson added that His Majesty is fully briefed and “greatly relieved” that the president, first lady, and guests escaped unharmed.
President Trump Praises King Charles Ahead of Visit
Speaking to Fox News, Donald Trump lauded King Charles, calling him “a fantastic person” and a “tremendous representative” of his nation. Trump also acknowledged the King’s health struggles, describing him as “very brave” and a longtime friend.
The King and Queen reportedly reached out privately to the Trumps, expressing their sympathy for those affected by the shooting and gratitude to the security forces for their swift response.

UK Security and Political Response
Darren Jones, chief secretary to the prime minister, told Sky News that UK security services maintain close cooperation with their US counterparts to safeguard the King’s visit.
Jones also revealed that Sir Keir Starmer sent a message of solidarity to President Biden, expressing support following the incident. British Embassy staff and UK nationals at the event praised the US Secret Service for their decisive actions.
Significance of the Visit Amid Diplomatic Tensions
King Charles’ state visit, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, will feature stops in Virginia, New York, and Washington DC, where he is set to address Congress.
The visit arrives amid strained UK-US relations, described by some as the lowest point since the 1956 Suez Crisis. Tensions have intensified due to President Trump’s criticism of Sir Keir Starmer’s refusal to support US military action in Iran and disparaging remarks about Britain’s defense capabilities.
Despite calls from various politicians and commentators urging the cancellation of the visit, Buckingham Palace and UK officials remain steadfast in continuing the engagement, underscoring the importance of maintaining strong transatlantic ties.
