Tristan Bates Theatre was set up by Sir Alan Bates and his family at the Actors’ Centre in Covent Garden, in memory of his son, Tristan, who died at the age of 20. Built in 1975, it is a small theatre with a capacity of 70. It gives actors, writers and directors the space to experiment with ideas and try new things before putting them on bigger stages. In the Actors Centre, performers can train while new work is being produced at the same time.
The theatre’s size is perfect for readings and with reasonable rates for performance it also is an important London venue where small national tours get the chance to be seen and also to get some press coverage.
With more than 5,500 people visiting the theatre each year, it is a well known venue in the acting community as well as in the wider industry.
