A harrowing incident unfolded in Derby city centre on Saturday night when a black Suzuki Swift mounted the pavement and struck seven pedestrians outside a pub on Friar Gate. The collision, occurring around 9:30 pm, left multiple victims seriously injured and sent shockwaves through the local community.

Seven Victims Injured in Friar Gate Collision
Emergency services rushed seven individuals, aged between 36 and 52, to hospital following the crash. While four have since been discharged, police confirmed that some sustained serious injuries. Thankfully, none of the victims’ injuries are considered life-threatening.

Suspect Arrested and Charged with Multiple Offenses
Sandhu Ponnachan, 36, from the Alvaston area of Derby, was swiftly apprehended near the scene. Authorities charged him with six counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, and possession of a bladed article. Originally from India, Ponnachan has been residing in the UK for several years.

Legal Proceedings and Police Appeal
Ponnachan remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. Derbyshire Police continue their thorough investigation into the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward.
Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred expressed sympathy for those affected and emphasized the community impact. “This incident has sent shockwaves through Derby and the wider county.
