Urgent Rescue Operation in English Channel
More than 100 migrants faced peril in the English Channel just days after the UK inked a landmark £650 million agreement with France to clamp down on dangerous crossings. On Sunday, the French coastguard swiftly rescued **106 migrants** after their dinghy broke down mid-sea.
The migrants were transferred onto a rescue vessel and safely transported to **Calais**, French officials confirmed. Among them, a woman lost consciousness and required an emergency helicopter evacuation, underscoring the precarious nature of these crossings.

Smugglers’ New Tactics Exposed
Authorities revealed that traffickers employed a so-called “taxi boat” to shuttle migrants. This craft was spotted in the early hours moving eastwards along the coast toward **Wimereux**, where it collected passengers. This method involves a single driver navigating along the shoreline to meet pre-arranged beaches. Migrants wade into the water to board the dinghies, a tactic designed to evade police detection.
UK-France Deal Aims to Halt Crossings
The rescue came just three days after Home Secretary **Shabana Mahmood** signed a three-year, £662 million pact with France. This deal funds enhanced beach patrols and police units targeting migrant crossings, aiming to reduce the annual number of perilous Channel journeys.
Saturday marked the arrival of the first migrants to the UK since the deal took effect. Under the agreement, UK officers will work closely with French counterparts to detain migrants before they even enter the water, disrupting smuggling operations at their source.
Funding and Enforcement Details
The UK government is committing over £501 million to finance five dedicated police units and enforcement actions along French beaches. An additional £160 million in funding hinges on the success of new tactics to curb crossings. If these measures fail to reduce numbers within a year, this extra funding will cease, according to the Home Office.
Despite the substantial investment, ministers have refrained from setting explicit targets to gauge the deal’s effectiveness.
Rising Migrant Arrivals Despite Efforts
So far in 2024, over 6,000 migrants have successfully crossed into the UK, representing a 36% decrease compared to last year at this time, based on government data analyzed by the Press Association. Since **Sir Keir Starmer** became Prime Minister, more than 70,000 migrants have arrived.
On Saturday, Border Security Command released images showing a group of more than a dozen migrants, including women and children, being processed after their Channel rescue and arrival in **Dover**.
This ongoing challenge underscores the complexity of securing the Channel and the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to dismantle smuggling networks and save lives.
