Police Demand Crucial Witness in 2012 Harlow House Fire Murder Case
More than a decade after a devastating house fire claimed the lives of a mother and her five children, Essex Police have made a compelling appeal to the anonymous author of a letter containing vital details about the tragedy. Authorities stress that this information could unlock the long-awaited answers in a case that has haunted the community since 2012.

The Tragic Fire That Shattered a Family
In October 2012, a fire erupted at a terraced home in Barn Mead, Harlow, Essex, engulfing the residence in flames while the family slept. The inferno claimed the lives of Sabah Usmani, 44, and her five children: Muneeb, 9, Rayyan, 6, Hira, 12, Sohaib, 11, and Maheen, 3. Sohaib and Maheen succumbed to their injuries in hospital, with Sohaib passing on the day of the fire and Maheen three days later.
The sole survivor, Dr Abdul Shakoor, a doctor at Princess Alexandra Hospital, bravely attempted to alert emergency services and save his family from the blaze.

Operation Shakespeare: A 14-Year Pursuit of Justice
Essex Police have classified the incident as murder, launching Operation Shakespeare, a painstaking investigation that has spanned nearly 14 years. Despite extensive efforts, the case has remained unresolved, with the 2014 coroner’s inquest returning an open conclusion due to insufficient evidence to categorize the deaths as either unlawful or accidental.
Detectives revealed that at approximately 1:40 a.m., the fire began downstairs while the family was asleep. Around the same time, a silver Ford Focus parked nearby was deliberately set ablaze, suggesting a coordinated attack.

Anonymous Letter Brings New Hope
On Thursday, police announced receipt of an anonymous letter outlining “a number of details” critical to advancing the investigation. Detectives stress that speaking directly with the letter’s author is essential to unlock the full potential of this information.

Lead Investigator’s Urgent Plea
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe, leading the inquiry, urged the author to come forward, emphasizing the writer’s apparent desire for justice for the Shakoor family. “The letter’s author references the torment of possessing knowledge yet feeling unable to share it,” DCI Metcalfe stated.
She assured the individual of fair treatment and highlighted the profound impact their cooperation could have. “Your information could be the key to holding responsible parties accountable for tearing the Shakoor family apart.”
DCI Metcalfe reaffirmed the team’s unwavering commitment: “We remain dedicated to securing answers for Dr Shakoor, who has endured far too long with painful questions surrounding the loss of his family.”
