London police deliver a stark warning: anyone involved in arson-for-hire schemes faces severe legal consequences. This comes as counter-terrorism officers arrested eight suspects linked to a spate of deliberate fires across the city.
Coordinated Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Within 48 hours, the Metropolitan Police detained seven individuals connected to an alleged conspiracy to commit arson. Authorities believe the attacks target elements associated with the Jewish community, although precise details remain undisclosed.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the Senior National Coordinator of Counter Terrorism Policing, emphasized that the investigation focuses heavily on the use of criminal intermediaries—individuals paid to execute these attacks.
Details of the Arrests
- Three men aged 24, 25, and 26 were arrested in Harpenden on the evening of Sunday, April 19. They were subsequently released on bail.
- A 25-year-old man was taken into custody in Stevenage the following day.
- Near Birmingham, police arrested a 26-year-old man and two women, aged 50 and 59. All three remain in custody at a London police station.
- On the morning of April 21, a 39-year-old man was detained in Ealing. This arrest relates to an investigation following the discovery of jars containing a non-hazardous substance in Kensington Gardens on Friday, April 17.
Additionally, officers conducted searches in east London as part of the ongoing operation.
Expanded Arrests Since March Attack
Since the March assault on Jewish-operated ambulances in Golders Green, North London, counter-terrorism police have made 23 arrests in total. Eight individuals face charges linked to arson, while thirteen others remain under investigation, either in custody or on bail.
‘The Stakes Are High’ – Police Message to Offenders
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Evans delivered a resolute message: law enforcement will relentlessly pursue those behind these attacks to ensure justice is served.
“Our communities will not be intimidated,” Evans stated. “We will track down every individual responsible. Using criminal proxies to commit these crimes is a primary focus of our inquiry.”
She warned anyone contemplating involvement in arson-for-hire schemes: “The consequences are severe. We will prosecute under the National Security Act, carrying significant sentences and lifelong restrictions. Engaging in this activity is simply not worth the risk.”
Evans concluded, “We will not rest until all perpetrators are held fully accountable.”
