Sara Cox to Revitalize BBC Radio 2 Morning Lineup
Sara Cox is set to take over as the host of the iconic BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show this summer, the BBC has confirmed. Currently commanding the teatime slot from 4pm to 7pm, Cox will transition to mornings, bringing her vibrant energy and loyal fan base to the flagship program.
A Dream Role Realized
Expressing her excitement, Cox shared, “There are not enough adjectives to really sum up how I’m feeling about being trusted with such an iconic show, but let’s start with ecstatic, honoured, and incredibly chuffed.” She reflected on her journey, calling the opportunity “a bit of a full circle” after seven successful years hosting the teatime show.
“I’ve had the most glorious seven years of my career on Teatime,” Cox remarked, “so thank you to my brilliant listeners who I hope will join me at Breakfast for excellent music, all my usual nonsense, plus some superstar guests. I honestly can’t wait to wake the nation up with the biggest, most fun breakfast show ever.”
Background: Scott Mills’ Departure
The move follows the BBC’s decision to part ways with Scott Mills in March. This came amid revelations that Mills had been investigated by the Metropolitan Police in 2016 over allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy between 1997 and 2000. The Crown Prosecution Service later concluded there was insufficient evidence to press charges, closing the case in May 2019.
Mills issued a statement in early April emphasizing the time elapsed since the allegation and investigation, urging the public and media to respect his desire for privacy and refrain from further comment.
Since Mills’ departure, Gary Davies has been serving as the interim breakfast show host.
Industry Reaction and Leadership Confidence
DJ and presenter Trevor Nelson praised Cox on air, saying, “You are gonna smash it girl. So well deserved. Absolutely love her on radio, and she’s gonna smash it.”
Helen Thomas, head of Radio 2, expressed her delight at Cox’s appointment: “Sara is adored by her millions of listeners at Teatime, and having regularly deputised in the slot, I already know she’ll build a brilliant rapport with the Breakfast audience and get the nation going each morning with her trademark warmth and humour.”
Next Steps for Radio 2
The BBC announced plans to reveal a new host for the teatime show in due course, ensuring continuity and fresh energy across its schedule.
