Ten Dead in Massive Russian Drone Assault as RAF Typhoons Scramble Over Romania

Russia unleashed a devastating overnight drone offensive on Ukraine, killing 10 people and injuring over 30 across multiple regions. Simultaneously, the Royal Air Force dispatched Eurofighter Typhoon jets to intercept drones near Romania, highlighting escalating tensions along NATO’s eastern flank.

Unprecedented Drone Barrage Targets Ukraine

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched an unprecedented strike involving 619 drones and 47 missiles. Ukrainian defenses successfully intercepted 580 drones and 30 missiles, but the assault still inflicted significant casualties and damage.

The city of Dnipro bore the brunt of the attack, with five fatalities confirmed by Ukraine’s state emergency service. The northern Chernihiv region lost two residents, while three more died and two were wounded in the Luhansk area during the overnight strikes, according to Russian state-affiliated sources.

RAF Typhoons Deployed to Defend Romanian Airspace

In response to drone activity near Romanian airspace, two British Eurofighter Typhoon jets launched from the 86th Air Base in Fetesti around 2 a.m., authorized to engage hostile drones. The aircraft detected targets just 1.5 kilometers from the Ukrainian border near the city of Reni.

Regional Impact and Damage Assessment

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the relentless bombardment on social media, emphasizing that infrastructure constituted the primary targets. Besides Dnipro, missile and drone attacks struck Chernihiv, Odessa, and Kharkiv regions.

In Dnipro, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported recovering two bodies from collapsed buildings, with five individuals still trapped and 21 injured. Chernihiv sustained two fatalities and seven injuries, while Odessa saw two wounded.

Meanwhile, Russian forces announced the capture of the village of Bochkove in Kharkiv, underscoring ongoing territorial contests.

Cross-Border Strikes and Rising Regional Tensions

Russian drone attacks spilled into Russia itself, killing a woman and severely injuring a man in Belgorod near the border. Ukrainian drones also struck an apartment complex in Yekaterinburg, wounding multiple civilians.

Romania experienced minor damage to an outbuilding and power infrastructure from drone debris. The Romanian Defence Ministry condemned Russia’s reckless incursions, labeling them a serious threat to regional security in the Black Sea area.

Diplomatic Moves Amid Ongoing Conflict

President Zelenskyy met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to sign defense and energy cooperation agreements, seeking to bolster Ukraine’s security network. Kyiv offered its expertise in low-cost drone defense tactics as part of these strategic partnerships.

Zelenskyy expressed openness to peace negotiations, highlighting previous trilateral talks in Turkey and Switzerland. He called on Russia to find the resolve to end the war, underscoring the crucial role of international mediators.

Recent Prisoner Swap

The drone attacks followed a significant prisoner exchange on Friday, where both sides swapped 193 service members, signaling ongoing, albeit fragile, channels of communication.
