Sir Stephen Fry, the renowned actor and presenter, is pursuing £100,000 in damages following a harrowing fall from a stage at London’s iconic O2 Arena. The 68-year-old suffered multiple fractures after tumbling two metres onto a concrete floor during the CogX Festival in September 2023.
Accident Details and Legal Action
High Court filings reveal that Sir Stephen fell while exiting the backstage area after delivering a talk at the festival. The documents state he plunged approximately two metres from the stage down to the unforgiving concrete surface below.
The claim targets CogX Festival Limited and Blonstein Events, accusing them of negligence and breaching their statutory duty. The lawsuit asserts these companies failed to maintain a safe environment by not ensuring the stage and backstage areas were adequately lit, secured, or protected to prevent such a dangerous fall.
Sir Stephen’s claim covers “personal injuries and consequential losses” totaling up to £100,000. This sum includes compensation for pain, suffering, and loss of amenity exceeding £1,000, along with interest and legal costs.
Sir Stephen Fry’s Injuries
In a December 2023 interview on BBC Radio 2 with Claudia Winkleman, Sir Stephen detailed the extent of his injuries: “I broke my right leg in several places, fractured my hip and pelvis in four locations, and cracked multiple ribs.” He described the fall as a “six-foot drop onto concrete” after unknowingly stepping off an unprotected section of the stage.
Legal Representation and Next Steps
Keith Barrett, a partner at law firm Fieldfisher representing Sir Stephen, emphasized the necessity of legal action. He explained, “The defendants dispute Sir Stephen’s version of events, so we must ask the court to determine responsibility for his injuries and losses.”
No court hearing date has been set for the case.
Efforts to obtain comments from CogX Festival and Blonstein Events have been made, but no statements have been issued.
