Severe Weather Warnings Issued Across Northern UK

The Met Office has issued urgent yellow severe weather warnings for very strong winds expected from Saturday evening until midday Sunday. The storm’s impact will stretch from Scotland and Northern Ireland down through North Wales and northern England, spanning a belt from Liverpool to Newcastle.

Authorities anticipate significant delays and disruptions to road, rail, air, and ferry transport throughout these regions. Coastal areas in western Scotland face the highest threat, with wind gusts reaching 90mph. More widespread gusts of 70mph are expected across northern Britain.

Snowfall Adds to Hazard in Northern Scotland

Alongside fierce winds, parts of northwest Scotland will experience disruptive snowfall. A 12-hour yellow warning for snow starts at 3pm Saturday, with forecasted accumulations of 5-10cm (2-4 inches) over 200m elevation, and isolated pockets potentially receiving 10-20cm (4-8 inches). Blizzards may develop over the northern Scottish hills as heavy snow combines with strong winds.

Power outages are a serious risk, with possible interruptions to mobile phone networks and other essential services.

Storm Dave’s Rapid Development and Impact

Met Office deputy chief forecaster Tom Crabtree explained that Storm Dave will intensify rapidly as it approaches the UK from the west on Saturday. He warned, “By Saturday afternoon, winds will strengthen significantly, with gusts of 60-70mph across parts of Scotland and exposed coastal spots potentially experiencing 80-90mph gusts. Northern Britain will generally see gusts of 50-60mph.”

As the storm progresses eastwards, heavy rainfall will spread across the UK, though southern regions will remain largely dry and breezy, with some sunny intervals expected Sunday afternoon and Monday.

Preparation Urged for Strong Winds

With the storm’s arrival imminent, residents in affected areas are urged to secure their property and prepare for severe weather conditions. The Met Office’s yellow wind alerts remain in place for Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and the Orkney and Shetland Islands through the weekend.

Storm Dave: The Fourth Named Storm of 2024

Storm Dave earns its name as the fourth significant weather system of the year. The storm’s name was nominated with a touch of humor: “my beloved husband who can snore three times louder than any storm.”

Meanwhile, parts of Ireland will also face very strong southerly winds on Saturday as the storm intensifies.
