Three teenagers have been sentenced to a combined 19 years in custody after luring a man they suspected of being a paedophile to a beach and violently killing him. The 16-year-old girl and two boys, aged 15 and 16, were convicted of manslaughter in the brutal death of Alexander Cashford in Leysdown-on-Sea on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, on 10 August last year.
Sentencing at Old Bailey: Manslaughter Convictions, Not Murder
The teenagers, whose identities remain protected by law, were acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter. At the Old Bailey on Thursday, the two 16-year-olds received seven-year sentences each, while the 15-year-old boy was sentenced to five years.
The court heard the group believed Mr. Cashford, 49, was a paedophile and deliberately lured him to a beach where they assaulted him with rocks and a bottle. Emergency responders later found him face down in the mud, gravely injured.

Deceptive Contact and Fatal Confrontation
Evidence showed that Mr. Cashford had met the girl at an amusement arcade on 8 August, giving her his phone number and a business card with a false name. The teenagers exchanged messages with him, during which he falsely claimed to be 30 years old and made inappropriate advances towards the girl, who was using the alias “Sienna.”

The meeting was arranged by the sea wall, where the older boy admitted initiating the attack, motivated by a belief that authorities would not intervene if the man attempted to meet the girl. During the assault, the girl shouted, “F****** paedophile, I’m f****** 16, get him,” while filming the chase.

Conflicting Testimonies on Intent
The older boy confessed he intended to use the bottle to harm Mr. Cashford but did not expect to cause serious injury. Both the girl and the younger boy insisted there was no plan to physically attack him. However, forensic examination revealed severe trauma: facial and head injuries, multiple bruises, and fractured ribs that punctured a lung.

Family Mourns ‘Kind and Compassionate’ Man
In a powerful statement read at sentencing, Mr. Cashford’s parents, David and Linda Cashford, described their son as a “kind, friendly and compassionate person” who loved local wildlife and sports. They expressed how “emotionally crushed” they are and emphasized that the damaging allegations against him are completely false.
His sister, Emma Gould, shared her anguish, saying her brother was taken away in a “cruel and violent” manner and lamented how she will explain to her six-year-old son that he will never see his uncle again.

Disturbing Social Media Evidence
Prosecutors presented mobile phone footage showing one of the boys striking Mr. Cashford on the head with a bottle. Shockingly, the 16-year-old shared the video with others minutes after the victim’s death, captioning it with a derogatory phrase. Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kimber described this as a “macabre” eagerness to publicize the attack on social media.

Witnesses recounted how the boy hurled a rock “the size of a cereal bowl” during the assault, contributing to the fatal injuries.
Defence Appeals for Leniency Amid Remorse
Danny Moore KC, defending the 16-year-old boy, highlighted the defendant’s troubled upbringing and genuine remorse, urging the court to impose the shortest possible sentence. The girl’s counsel, Danny Robinson KC, explained that what began as a “big laugh” in texting Mr. Cashford evolved into a misguided attempt to expose him.
Judgment: From Mischief to Fatal Misconduct
Presiding over the sentencing, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb acknowledged the incident started as “a bit of mischief” but escalated into “dangerous misconduct” that ultimately claimed a man’s life.
