UK weather: Warmest start to April in six years possible as temperatures climb

UK Braces for Warmest April Start in Six Years as Temperatures Soar

UK Shifts From Stormy Gusts to Sunshine and Soaring Temperatures

The UK is trading Storm Dave’s ferocious winds for a surge of spring sunshine, poised to deliver its warmest start to April in six years. Temperatures could soar up to 24°C (75°F) today, shattering seasonal averages across much of the country.

Wales to Bask in Record-Breaking Warmth

Western Wales is set to bask in the best weather, eclipsing last week’s peak of 20.9°C (70°F) recorded in Worcestershire. Tomorrow promises to push the mercury even higher, offering an early taste of summer warmth.

Temperature Drop Looms by Thursday

Despite this heatwave, temperatures will sharply decline to between 10°C and 13°C (50°F to 55°F) by Thursday as cooler, more unsettled weather sweeps in.

From Storm Dave’s Fury to Unseasonal Warmth

This dramatic weather turnaround contrasts starkly with the Easter weekend’s chaos, when Storm Dave unleashed 70mph winds causing widespread disruption and damage.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst highlights the unusual warmth: “Average temperatures in early April typically hover around 15°C (59°F). The southerly winds combined with clear skies are driving temperatures well above this norm.”

He added, “The last time we saw similar early April warmth was in 2020, when Cornwall reached 26°C (78.8°F).”

Challenges for Hayfever Sufferers

However, this warm spell brings a downside for allergy sufferers. A very high red pollen warning remains in effect across England and Wales, with tree pollen counts expected to soar under light winds, intensifying symptoms nationwide.

What Lies Ahead This Week?

A Met Office spokesperson explained, “The current warmth stems entirely from the southerly wind direction. Over the next couple of days, these warm winds will push temperatures into the mid-20s Celsius.”

“By Thursday, expect a return to typical seasonal temperatures as rain and showers bring more changeable conditions.”

Looking toward the weekend, northern regions will see temperatures steady around 10°C (50°F), while southern areas can expect milder conditions near 14°C (57°F).
