Chaos erupted in Epsom as protests sparked by an alleged rape outside a local church escalated into violent clashes, resulting in four arrests. Tensions flared on Monday evening when demonstrators gathered on a residential street, hurling eggs and beer cans at police officers.
Protesters Target Police and Residential Areas
Surrey Police reported that the protest quickly spiraled into public disorder, with missiles thrown at officers. Police surrounded a nearby residential property and local hotels, which protesters mistakenly claimed housed asylum seekers. Authorities firmly denied these claims, labeling the information as “wholly inaccurate.”

In response to the aggression, officers donned full protective public order gear to maintain control. Police warned that anyone engaging in criminal acts during the unrest would face strict enforcement measures.
Ongoing Investigation Yields No Evidence Linking Suspects to Asylum Seekers
The alleged attack took place in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, outside a Methodist church on Ashley Road after the victim left the Labyrinth nightclub. Despite public outcry, Surrey Police have not released any suspect descriptions, citing limited information in the investigation.
Assistant Chief Constable Sarah Grahame emphasized, “To date, we have not found any evidence supporting the offence as reported, but the investigation remains active.” She further clarified that no evidence connects asylum seekers or immigrants to the incident.
Background of Unrest: Previous Protests Fueled by Misinformation
This violent episode follows an earlier protest last Wednesday, where demonstrators blocked roads in Epsom town centre before dispersing around 8 p.m. Notably, Danny Tommo, a known associate of right-wing activist Tommy Robinson, promoted that initial gathering online, amplifying tensions.
As Surrey Police continue their inquiry, the community remains on edge, grappling with the fallout from both the alleged crime and the ensuing protests.
