The Museum of Contemporary Art, London was founded in 1994 as a project based museum. No formal built space was to be required to mount a series of international exhibitions that incorporated sculpture, video, painting, photography and installation. Projects were curated for virtual and specific sites, and these past projects can be seen in the Archive.

In January 2004 MOCA opened a project space in South London in the Bellenden Renewal Area to initiate a series of exhibitions that were locally based but global in focus. The Project Space exists to offer established and upcoming artists the possibility of making non-commercial work, developing the projects over various periods of time to suit both the artist and MOCA. Projects emerge when they are ready. This co-operative style of working means that the Project Space has no formal exhibition structure, and works are in situ when they are ready. You can find these projects in Past Projects.

MOCA London is pleased to present a review of the work of the Polish maker, Giedymin Jabloński. Born in Gdańsk, he originally trained as an architect and physicist before turning to jewellery and sculpture. The show will cover over 40 years of work. Jabloński will present sculptures, wall works and jewellery in a variety of media including stone, silver, gold and his speciality: amber.

Jabloński comes from an area of the Baltic where amber has been worked for hundreds of years and his own conceptual, as well as technical work with the material is well known on the continent. This will be his first full showing of work in the UK.

Jabloński has taught at the Royal College of Art in London, and in the 1970’s he was an important figure in the Polish crafts world establishing workshops in small sculpture at Gdańsk State Higher School of Fine Arts (now the Academy of Fine Arts) and he later was one of the founders of the Artist Goldsmiths Association. He is also a founder of the International Amber and Jewellery Fair (AMBERIF). He has acted as a judge in many competitions including the Legnica Jewellery Festival, the St. Petersburg Figure and Form contest and the Fashion and Jewellery context in Kaliningrad.

MOCA London will present the work with the help of the Polish Cultural Institute London and the Polish Embassy.

The exhibition is sponsored by Art7, Poland
