Originally the building, built in 1929, pumped water from the River Thames to the Surrey Commercial Docks to maintain the water level at low tide. The Pumphouse was refurbished in 1989 and is used today as an Heritage Museum and environmental study centre. It is set adjacent to a two hectare nature park and pond, a peaceful haven in bustling London.
Private collection of artefacts from the Thames foreshore in Rotherhithe. Includes Elizabethan cannon-balls, human skulls, jewellery, coins and clay pipes. The museum tells the story of Rotherhithe and contains a unique collection of dockers’ tools.
